Indonesia's 78th Independence Day - Things to Expect

The annual celebration of Indonesia Independence Day takes place on August 17. Indonesia's declaration of independence from the Netherlands in 1945 is commemorated as the national holiday and this yearly celebration is traditionally referred to as "Hari Ulang Tahun Kemerdekaan Republik Indonesia," or just "Hari Kemerdekaan." The month of August in Indonesia is usually filled with patriotic and cultural parades, red and white artwork, and street decorations. Here are some of the most exciting traditions and activities during this special holiday.

Tradition - Flag Ceremonies
Official flag ceremonies are typically held at schools and workplaces to mark Indonesians' Independence Day. As they sing national anthems, pray for the nation's fallen heroes, and recite the declaration text, students are assembled on the field wearing their school uniforms. Similar events take place in offices, as staff members congregate to participate in flag ceremonies in front of their workplaces, both in public and private institutions. Following the flag ceremonies, more casual celebrations begin with a variety of competitions and games.

Games - Makan Kerupuk
Every Indonesian is quite familiar with this competition, and several non-Indonesians frequently take part in it. In this nation, crackers are regarded as one of the best snacks and are also very accessible. In this particular game, crackers are suspended from a bar, and players must eat them as quickly as possible while keeping both hands behind their backs.

Games - Panjat Pinang
Although climbing a tree is not particularly challenging, if the tree is covered in oil, it will be much more challenging. One must climb a palm tree that is coated with oil to participate in this particular event. In fact, if you can climb to the summit of the tree, there are many rewards waiting for you. Bicycles, portable fans, and other items are among the noteworthy awards. People who try to climb these trees frequently damage themselves by falling from tremendous heights, so the game's designers made some modifications. For instance, dirt, which is less slick than oil, is frequently used in place of it nowadays.

Games - Tarik Tambang
One of the earliest games ever invented, this one was especially well-liked in ancient Egypt and Greece. It is basically a game of tug of war in which two teams must drag one another toward the center line. Each of these teams comprises five to six players, and the team that can pull first is regarded as the winner.

Games - Balap Karung
The only need to play this particular game is to climb into a bag and hop your way to the finish line. Despite this straightforward regulation, the majority of the competitors fail to finish the race, which frequently results in amusing situations. This kind of event is simple to plan because all you need is a blank space and a few empty bags.
