Commemorating Pancasila Day

On the first of June, Indonesia celebrates a public holiday known as Pancasila Day as it commemorates the founding of Pancasila, Indonesia's national ideology. However, it is not a holiday for everyone as some individuals still have to work on this specific day. Even though it has been honored since 1945, the President of Indonesia Joko “Jokowi“ Widodo proclaimed it as an official public holiday in 2016 and was first celebrated in 2017.

Prior to Indonesian independence, on the first of June in 1945, Sukarno, the country's first president and founding father, made a speech in which he introduced Pancasila. The official, fundamental philosophical framework of the Indonesian state was developed by the speech's ideology. The following is a translated version of Pancasila's five principles that became the nation's foundation.

  1. Belief in the one and only God (Ketuhanan Yang Maha Esa)
  2. Just and civilized humanity (Kemanusiaan Yang Adil dan Beradab)
  3. The unity of Indonesia (Persatuan Indonesia)
  4. Democracy guided by the inner wisdom in the unanimity arising out of deliberations amongst representative (Kerakyatan Yang Dipimpin oleh Hikmat Kebijaksanaan Dalam Permusyawaratan Perwakilan)
  5. Social justice for the whole of the people of Indonesia (Keadilan Sosial bagi seluruh Rakyat Indonesia)

On Pancasila Day, a celebration is often held to honor this day. This celebration is attended by the heads of state institutions, cabinet ministers, government agency heads, representatives of Indonesia, and regional leaders. Although citizens can take part in the event, they also have their own ways for honoring this day. In recognition of this special day, flag-raising ceremonies are very common to do and many of these ceremonies would include talks or demonstrations about the significance of the Pancasila. Due to Pancasila's uniting qualities, Indonesians frequently use this day to remind their countrymen how crucial it is to treat each other civilly. Although only celebrated on one day, Pancasila Day is known to be one of Indonesia's most important holidays to commemorate Pancasila and its five principles.
