A Unique Coastal Gem in Yogyakarta with Mystical Charms

Yogyakarta, known for its plethora of breathtaking tourist destinations, offers a unique beach experience in the Gunungkidul district, particularly at Baron Beach. Situated between two coral hills, Baron Beach presents a remarkable natural phenomenon. What sets it apart is the presence of a substantial underground freshwater flow, distinguishing it from the typical seawater found along the coast.

A fascinating phenomenon, characterized by the two colors in the waters of Gunungkidul Regency near Baron Beach, has been gradually fading. However, during periods of heavy rainfall, when the river that flows into Baron Beach overflows, a similar incident is likely to occur again.

Marjono, the SAR Coordinator of the Special Rescue Unit for Region II Gunungkidul, reported that this phenomenon began last week. He further explained that if heavy rain does not flush Kapanewon Wonosari within a week, the seawater color will return to normal.
Baron Beach has also witnessed impromptu waterfalls. Intense rainfall in Gunung Kidul Regency, especially in Kapanewon Tanjungsari, causes the underground river that empties into Baron Beach to overflow. As a result, the beach water turns brown, and a sudden waterfall emerges.

Surisdiyanto, the Secretary of SAR for Special Rescue Units Region II Gunungkidul, clarified that the overflow of the underground river at Baron Beach is a common occurrence during heavy rains.

Additionally, Baron Beach boasts a 40-meter-high lighthouse that provides panoramic views. For a nominal fee of IDR 5,000 per person, visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse. From there, they can enjoy the picturesque sights of Baron Beach, with fishing boats neatly arranged along the shoreline. To explore the natural beauty of Baron Beach, Krakal Beach, and Kukup Beach, one can avail themselves of this opportunity for approximately IDR 10,000.

Baron Beach is situated in the village of Kemadang, Tanjungsari District, Gunungkidul Regency. From Jogja, travelers can take the Malioboro East Ring Road, then continue to the South Ring Road, head towards the Wonosari direction, pass by the Sri Gethuk waterfall, and follow the road until reaching Baron Beach.

Looking back, Baron Beach holds a historical significance and a myth. According to Dr. Noto Pamungkas' book, "Increasing Java Coastal Tourism," the name "Baron" is said to have been given by a Dutch nobleman named Baron Skeber. During the Dutch colonial era, Baron Beach served as a protective site for Dutch soldiers. However, when the Japanese arrived, the beach became accessible to local residents, leading them to settle in the area as fishermen.
