A Land of Eternal Snow and Extraordinary Ecosystems

At an elevation of 4,884 meters above sea level, Lorentz National Park is home to Puncak Jaya (Carstensz Pyramid), the highest peak in Southeast Asia, along with the Trikora and Jaya mountains. This vast protected area spans from alpine highlands to marshlands along the Arafura coast, creating a seamless transition of diverse ecosystems. A remarkable feature of the park is its perpetual glaciers, making it one of the few places near the equator where snow exists year-round. Recognizing its unparalleled geological and ecological significance, UNESCO designated Lorentz National Park as a World Heritage Site. Adding to its mystique, the Baliem River flows underground through karst tunnels, where researchers have discovered fossils and sediments containing remnants of prehistoric mammals, including the grassland-dwelling cuscus.

Lorentz National Park is a living laboratory of evolution, with tropical rainforests, alpine meadows, and coastal wetlands supporting unique flora and fauna found nowhere else. Its high-altitude grasslands and montane forests shelter rare species like the tree kangaroo and MacGregor's bird-of-paradise. Scientists continue to explore the park, uncovering new plant species and potential medicinal properties within its diverse vegetation.

One of the park's most captivating attractions is Lake Habema, located at an altitude of 3,000 meters above sea level. Known for its cooler temperatures compared to most of Indonesia, the lake experiences 10-15°C weather, with intense sun exposure that warms the body as the morning unfolds. Unlike the dense tropical forests of lower altitudes, no trees grow at this elevation, but the marshy terrain is covered in yellow and purple-hued plants, some of which remain scientifically unidentified. A local belief suggests that one of these plants possesses anti-AIDS and anticancer properties, though no formal studies have confirmed this claim. Encircled by ancient ferns, vast grasslands, and misty marshes, Lake Habema is a sanctuary for rare wildlife, where birds-of-paradise and tree kangaroos still roam in the depths of the surrounding forests. Visitors often flock to Lorentz National Park in August to witness the Baliem Valley Festival, where the Dani, Yali, and Lani tribes showcase their unique dances, war simulations, and centuries-old cultural traditions, offering an immersive experience into Papua's indigenous heritage.
